In our meetings, I broke down each step of the process in clear, bilingual terms. We created a timeline, explained key deadlines, and practiced how to gather documents together. The Lopez parents later shared that they not only felt empowered to help Sofia apply to college but also felt reassured that they were making informed decisions as a family.

The Hernandez family was navigating the financial aid application for the first time. The process felt overwhelming—so many options, confusing forms, and long wait times. One evening, we called the financial aid office together and waited on hold for nearly three hours. As the minutes dragged on, Mr. Hernandez grew frustrated. He sighed, “Maybe it’s better if we just pay out of pocket… or maybe my son should just start at community college.” His frustration was not about his willingness to support his child, but about feeling powerless in a system he didn’t understand.

In that moment, I reminded them that they were not alone. I stayed with the family through the entire call, helping interpret the language of financial aid and keeping the focus on solutions. Once the issue was finally resolved, Mr. Hernandez apologized, sharing how thankful he was that someone stayed calm and patient during such a stressful experience.

In the end, their son didn’t have to give up his dream—he enrolled at the university of his choice with the right financial aid package in place.
